چکیده

We present a detailed comparison, in a comprehensive framework, of Mobile IP and seven of the main IP Micromobility protocols. We first describe the global mobility landscape and point out the important issues that must be addressed. These are mainly Handoff management, Passive Connectivity and Paging support, Scalability and Robustness. Based on this framework, we examine in a first step Mobile IP as a Macro-mobility protocol. In a second step, we compare seven recently proposed IP Micro-mobility protocols: Hierarchical Mobile IP, Proactive Handoff, Fast Handoff, TeleMIP, Cellular IP, HAWAII, and EMA.

The Ip Micro Mobility Approach

Mobile IP is a powerful protocol which supports Internet mobility and scales reasonably with the number of users within a system. Due to the high roundtrip delay of the Internet and due to Mobile IP’s control overhead, Mobile IP causes connections of a mobile node to be interrupted for up to 5 seconds for each change of its attachment point to the Internet. This interruption induces TCP to run ...

Comparison of IP micromobility protocols

We present a performance comparison of a number of key micro-mobility protocols that have been discussed in the IETF Mobile IP Working Group over the past several years. IP micro-mobility protocols complement Mobile IP by offering fast and seamless handoff control in limited geographical areas and IP paging in support of scalability and power conservation. We show that despite the apparent diff...

Cellular and Mobile IP: overview and enhancements

The Internet Engineering Taskforce (IETF) Mobile IP protocol is considered to have limitations in its capability to handle large numbers of Mobile Stations moving fast between different radio cells, a process called Handoff. The Handoff frequency should typically not exceed once a second. However, Mobile IP is well suited for interconnecting disparate cellular networks effectively providing glo...

Micro-Mobility Protocol Design and Evaluation: A Parameterized Building Block Approach

In this paper, we present a novel approach to design and analyze IP micro-mobility protocols. The functionality of micro mobility protocols is partitioned into parameterized, relatively independent, building blocks. We study the requirements and design options for the building blocks by taking into consideration a wide variety of operation scenarios, including varied support from the infrastruc...

Context transfer for seamless micro-mobility

Wireless networks and mobile computing technologies are having a profound impact on IP-based networks, as their basic protocols were designed without assuming mobility of the network nodes. More recently, protocols like Mobile IP have been designed to handle global mobility, and micro-mobility protocols have been proposed for the management of intra-domain mobility. However, these protocols do ...
